( if you ask to join, please send a short description of your archery credentials) spta 'shoot for nepal': sunday 27th september, 2015, shackleford, england 70 archers, representing 5 countries, gathered for this multi-event organised to raise funds for the people of nepal. rebuilding will continue for many years after the april 2015 earthquake has left the headlines, and while this fund is small, we are sure that the resourceful nepalese will make every penny count. the day was enjoyed greatly -not least because of the sunshine, and the company of 20 nepalese archers from a local club made the day special. this shoot was held together with longbow heritage and everest archery club. t he generosity of all was heartwarming. the nepalese archers brought food and arrows to sell, and taught archers th e rules of nepalese competition. in return, the nepalese enjoyed spta's clout, wand, popinjay,speed shooting and the trap ('pie-flinger') and 'fluflu in the bin' as well as a field archery course set out by longbow heritage. below top: some of the participants with the nepalese target at the end of the day, many of the 70 archers who attended gathered to record a very special day spta organised a group visit to the mary rose museum after the 2015 st georges shoot -including a talk about the ship and her crew. welcome to spta! if you are new to us, you can find out more about spta here what is traditional archery? world archery traditions english archery traditions getting started spta -shooting in variety! bowmaking workshops occasional articles links suggested reading home page membership clothing/sales contact news & shoot reports news updated 26 april 2018 12th augiust 2018 kyrton/spta cream tea shoot booking form download photos of st georges shoot 2017 are available https://www.facebook.com/sptas-st-georges-shoot-2017-255244321614445// 2018 st georges shoot video made by our spanish visitors: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jvn9ehbsdn4. ashmolean archery day 27th july 2013: our team worked hard all day at this event, which was part of the museum's archaeology week. few people know that the museum has some of the earliest collected bows in the uk (if not the world) unfortunately these aren't on display at present. displays of traditional bows and arrows, including 140lb warbows (with mark stretton to demonstrate), bowmaking (hilary), turkish archery (adnan) and lectures on bows through the ages. back to front page news our shoot for nepal (see below) which generated an invitation to a shoot hosted by everest archery in farnborough, where 8 teams competed at nepalese traditional archery. it was a great day, not at all blighted by our not winning...but we weren't quite last. the nepalese were great hosts, but they did admit they fielded their best archers and won, of course, despite denying they practice at their traditional distance! spta's second 'shoot for nepal took place in 2016 . altogether we raised over £2500 to help with the rebuild. a big thankyou to all who took part and gave so generously. honours went to jay from taiwan, who raised the team to 7th place (out of 8) by scoring a 'kohl', a 1.5 inch bullseye at 38 yards! (with an english longbow!) jay was given the celebratory drink of homemade rice wine, anointed with red powder and given a flower behind his ear to wear -he also wore a big smile! the scoring arrow was blessed (left) barracking was allowed, although somewhat restrained compared to our tibetan -style shoot. apparently thee nepalese have drums, but those remained in storage -sadly! awards were given to the oldest (mick on left- a bottle of rice wine which he has clearly already tasted) and youngest (angharad-a beautiful pashmina scarf) -both spta members, so we were 'mentioned in despatches'! also given were 'certificates of appreciation' from the rastriya jana jagriti school to hilary and carol for helping raise money towards the rebuild. thanks to everest archery club for some of these photos.
